Transportation

Overview

Walmart operates one of the largest private trucking fleets in North America, with approximately 14,000 drivers and tens of thousands of tractors and trailers. While primarily a retailer, Walmart plays a significant role as a transportation provider for its supplier base through its collect freight program, where Walmart arranges and manages inbound pickup of goods from supplier ship points to Walmart distribution centers.

For collect suppliers, Walmart's transportation management system assigns carriers — either from its private fleet or contracted third-party carriers — and controls routing, mode selection, and scheduling. Modes include full truckload, LTL, and intermodal. Walmart also operates its own intermodal service using proprietary containers and company drivers for drayage. Through its subsidiary WMSC Logistics Services, Walmart offers ocean freight from select Asian ports to U.S. fulfillment centers for marketplace sellers.

Suppliers and marketplace sellers interact with Walmart's transportation network for inbound freight to distribution centers and fulfillment facilities. Shippers on collect terms rely on Walmart to manage carrier assignment, pickup scheduling, and delivery appointments, while prepaid suppliers manage their own carriers but must comply with Walmart's routing and OTIF requirements.
