Overview
SAP S/4HANA is SAP's current-generation ERP suite, built on the SAP HANA in-memory database. It is designed for mid-sized to large enterprises and is widely adopted across manufacturing, distribution, retail, automotive, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, energy, and the public sector. SAP positions S/4HANA as its core ERP platform going forward, and it reorganizes the classic SAP module structure into lines of business including Finance, Sales, Sourcing and Procurement, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, and Asset Management.
The supply chain and logistics-relevant capabilities in S/4HANA are extensive. The Sales line of business manages order processing, pricing, available-to-promise checks, and delivery scheduling. Sourcing and Procurement handles purchase requisitions, purchase orders, contract management, and supplier collaboration. The Supply Chain line of business covers production planning, inventory management, batch traceability, and warehouse management — with Extended Warehouse Management (EWM) embedded directly into the platform. The system also supports demand planning, MRP, and detailed production scheduling.
Logistics teams rely on S/4HANA as a source of sales orders, purchase orders, delivery documents, transfer orders, inventory positions, goods movements, and demand forecasts. Its real-time processing means that inventory and order data are always current, which is particularly valuable for companies managing complex, high-volume, or global supply chains.
